Join 4-H!

Seven young children playing with legos in a small pool of water.

Mississippi’s 4-H program reaches youth with a variety of interests. Many people see the green 4-H clover and automatically assume it’s only a program for students participating in livestock. While livestock is one of our biggest project areas, 4-H offers so many other areas of interest!

There’s shooting sports, robotics, cooking, leadership, wildlife, art, community service, and so many more projects to choose from! If your child is interested in a certain activity, there’s a good chance we have a 4-H club for it.

Info on Joining 4-H

  • 4-H is a FREE organization to join.
  • It’s offered to children 5–19 years old.
  • Contact your local Extension office. That’s it!
Three students cooking.
This group of 4-H'ers won first at the cooking contest at State 4-H Congress and then placed third in the Great American Seafood Cook Off in New Orleans!

Dr. Mariah Morgan, interim head of the Center for 4-H Youth Development, wanted to let everyone know about a few of the Mississippi 4-H projects underway:

  • Mississippi 4-H is in the process of developing new programs that incorporate ScratchJr, a computer coding program application for young children. Our team has been training 4-H agents so they can implement this programming in their counties!
  • Our team is working on installing pollinator habitats at the Mississippi 4-H Museum in Jackson, MS. Students made pollinator pods at State 4-H Congress and STEAM Day events to take back home and set up in their yard. Mississippi 4-H is committed to helping youth grow into responsible stewards of our planet!
  • Mississippi 4-H is also busy, busy judging Senior and Junior record books! Record books are 4-H’ers’ documentation of their achievements, projects, and activities. It’s awesome getting to see how 4-H’ers set goals and reach them!

There’s a lot of fun things happening in 4-H! This is your sign to get the children in your life involved in one of the largest youth development organizations in the United States!

A group selfie of several students.
Senior 4-H'ers were able to learn about photo and video techniques over the summer at a workshop I helped teach. You'll find me at the very end!

On a personal note, one of the greatest joys of my job is getting to photograph 4-H’ers at various events. I’ve been able to get to know them personally over the years and watch them grow into outstanding young adults. I’m grateful to see the impact 4-H is making on Mississippi’s youth. Let me tell you, 4-H is helping to raise a great bunch of future leaders!
