Gary's Medallion Plants

As I plan my landscape and garden each year, I always make room for Mississippi Medallion winners. Let’s take a look at some of my favorites. Fireworks Gomphrena is outstanding in my home landscape. It’s covered all summer with iridescent hot pink flowers whose bright yellow tips give the appearance of exploding fireworks. This plant has the potential to be large, up to four feet tall and wide. I’ve paired it with Truffula gomphrena, with hot pink flowers matching Fireworks. Vista Bubblegum Supertunia has flowers that are clear, bright pink and it performs well in my landscape every year. This is a very vigorous selection. A fully grown Vista Bubblegum Supertunia can be truly stunning! This year I’ve added a new supertunia, Vista Snowdrift with pure white flowers, and it may be perfect companion for Vista Bubblegum. Vermillionaire cuphea has earned its spot in my landscape. This heat loving plant is covered from spring to fall with abundant fiery hot yellow, red and orange tubular flowers. Vermillionaire cuphea is perennial in my coastal landscape but is also a great flowering annual. Blue My Mind Evolvulus is a prolific bloomer with individual funnel-shaped sky blue flowers. The flowers only open for one day and in the morning are brilliant, but by afternoon will be looking quite spent. But in the morning the gorgeous flowering starts all over again. Not only do I promote these plants, I grow them too. They’re Southern Gardening Approved! I’m horticulturist Gary Bachman and I hope to see you next time on Southern Gardening.
