Rosehill Cottage

Today Southern Gardening is visiting a great example that your garden does not have to be large to have a big impact. We’re in Natchez at the Rosehill Cottage garden which makes the most of a small landscape planted with flowering, colorful perennials. Everywhere you look in the front landscape are roses. You can certainly see where this landscape got its name. Other plants of interest include the poppies, with their big flashy flowers. I really like this double flowered variety that is simply stunning, and makes a bold statement. The seed pods are held on upright stems and look like small heads with a crown, and make great additions to floral arrangements. These foxglove are certainly a hit in the garden with their large bell-shaped flowers produced on spikes up to 18 inches tall. A closer look at the outward facing flowers reveals a unique speckled throat that adds interest. I really enjoy the spring show of Homestead Purple verbena The colorful bearded iris is spring favorite of mine and another plant that makes a great cut flower for enjoying indoors. A very special rose grows in in the back yard. Peggy Martin is a thornless rose that is a vigorous climber and can easily reach up to 15 feet. It produces clusters of pink shaded flowers from spring through fall. This is also called the Hurricane Rose after the original plant that survived Katrina.
