Fall Landscapes

The fall season is always a favorite of mine as our flowering landscape plants get a second chance to shine. Today we’re at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center in Verona taking a look at some of their display plantings. I’ve always liked the varieties of cutting zinnia, maybe even more so in the fall garden. The vivid colors of these varieties, including Benary Giants, are impressive especially on the tall stems. With the range of colors including white, pink, yellow, and purples, these are perfect for cutting to be enjoyed indoors. It’s amazing how many butterflies and bumblebees are also attracted to these flowers as they’re looking for a fall meal. One of the best combination plantings I’ve seen in a long time is Black and Bloom salvia and Glitz euphorbia. I love the way the black stems and calyces and deep blue flowers of Black and Bloom seem to be accentuated by Glitz’s cloud-like mass of white flowers. One of the plants that should be planted more is our American beautyberry and despite its native status, it’s quite at home in the landscape. The production of bright magenta purple berries in tight clusters all up and down the arching stems will be sure to be an attention getter in the fall landscape. With the cooling fall temperatures be sure to get out and enjoy the garden. I’m horticulturist Gary Bachman and I’ll see you next time on Southern Gardening.
