Sedums

One of the most diverse and interesting groups of plants are sedums. Though small in stature, sedums pack a punch with the varied shapes, colors, and textures. There are actually several species that tend to be lumped together as sedums. All are succulent plants having fleshy leaves. The leaf shapes vary from broad and flat to thick and stubby. The colors range from green to red to icy blue and many have tinges of red. The kalanchoe variety Panda Bear is even fuzzy. The seafoam green foliage has a soft pubescence with rusty garnet trim along the leaf edge. An interesting choice is sedum clavatum. The thick succulent leaves are grayish green with pink tips. I really the gray pink foliage colors of graptoveria and echerveria. After watering the tight rosettes hold droplets of water that seem to resemble diamonds. In previous Southern Gardening segments we have seen sedum combination containers. These are a perfect way to display a variety of sedums. And they’re easy to make. Select a nice shallow ceramic container; this will be in better proportion with the sedum plants. Choose a variety of sedums and transplant into potting mix. The containers are ready to display the beauty of the sedums. Sedums are an easy to grow group of plants that reward you with interesting textures and colors.
