I consider Angelonia to be one of the best plants for my hot summer garden today on Southern Gardening.

Angelonia are commonly called summer snapdragons. I love the spiky texture of the Angelonia flower stalks are welcome additions to any summer garden. In 2007 the Serena Angelonia were selected as Mississippi Medallion winners and have flower colors including blues, pinks, violets, and white. Serena Angelonia will grow to 12 inches tall and spread up to 14 inches. Another option are Serenita Angelonia and have taken the gardening world by storm. The entire series were chosen as Mississippi Medallion winners in 2016 and are more dwarf and compact compared to Serena. In my opinion I think the colors are deeper and much more vibrant. The Archangel series is a little larger about 14 inches tall and 12 inches wide. An added bonus is the flower stalks of Archangel are perfect for cutting and enjoying indoors. Once established Angelonia is drought and heat tolerant. These are great attributes for the hot summer conditions in Mississippi landscapes. Angelonia will thrive when planted in the full sun in fertile, well-drained landscape beds or containers. Maintaining a consistent supply of fertilizer is required for the optimum performance and flowering. Fertilize with a complete controlled release garden fertilizer at planting. Supplemental water soluble fertilizer applied monthly will keep Angelonia going strong. Angelonia will give your garden and landscape consistent color all summer so be sure to plants some and enjoy this summer. Until next time, I’m horticulturist Gary Bachman enjoying our Southern Gardening.
