VERONA, Miss. -- Master Gardeners are known for their expert knowledge and community service, and those interested in joining this group have an opportunity to sign up for training starting Aug. 13.
“The Master Gardener volunteer program is offered by the Mississippi State University Extension Service,” said Jeff Wilson, Extension horticulture specialist and state coordinator of the Master Gardener program. “It is a way to gain horticultural expertise at a low cost, meet other avid gardeners, share gardening experiences, get connected to the community and belong to a well-respected and educational organization.”
Registration for the next class of Master Gardeners opens Aug. 13 and closes Sept. 10. Participants can begin their training Oct. 1, and all coursework must be completed by Dec. 3.
“Master Gardeners are trained and certified in consumer horticulture and related areas,” Wilson said. “In exchange for 40 hours of educational training, individuals are required to return 40 hours of volunteer service within one year of their training.”
This volunteer service helps county Extension offices with horticulture projects that benefit their local communities. After the first year, participants return 20 hours of volunteer service and attend 12 hours of educational training to remain certified as Master Gardeners. This continuing education encourages long-term commitments, and most certified Master Gardeners serve five to seven years in the program.
“Master Gardener volunteers extend the educational arm of the university to the public by providing horticultural information based on university research and recommendations,” Wilson said.
There are about 1,400 active Master Gardeners in Mississippi. Similar programs are offered in each state through that state’s Extension Service.
All Master Gardener instruction is online and self-paced. Participants pay $175 to register for this training. Those who want horticulture training but not the volunteer service component can register for $225 for a home gardening course. Additionally, anyone is welcome to pay $35 per class for select classes offered year-round without the volunteer component.
