Know Your Roots
Know Your Roots is a series of historic and cultural educational programs to preserve Mississippi’s rich Delta Heritage and resulted from the visions and efforts of the Warren County Master Gardeners.
In 2011, the Warren County Master Gardeners partnered with the Vicksburg National Military Park to create the Heritage Demonstration Garden which was funded through a grant from the National Park Service Parks as Classrooms® program in which plantings typical of a 19th century kitchen garden are grown.
The garden planned and managed by the Master Gardeners serves as a working lab for summer Jr. Ranger Park program and as point of interest for the estimated 600,000 annual park visitors allowing them to experience and learn of Mississippi’s deep Delta Heritage.
In 2016, MSU, the Warren County Master Gardeners, and the Vicksburg National Military Park partnered to receive a grant from the Mississippi Delta National Heritage Area Partnership. This funding provided improvements to the garden and the Know Your Roots educational programs which extend to training the trainers, a Vicksburg National Military Park tour guide certification; training the Vicksburg hospitality industry, multiple youth workshops, a community awareness event and adult workshops such as the short course, Know Your Roots Grow Your Business held on June 13, 2017.
